Lady Brabourne College was established in July 1939 by the Government of West Bengal. The college is named after the wife of Lord Brabourne, the Governor of Bengal till February 1939.The College started its first journey with 35 Muslim students and nine faculty members in a rented house near Park Circus in Kolkata. In 26th August 1939 the college shifted to its present location. Today, the college is one of the premier institutions for women's education in India. A cordial yet informal teacher - student relationship exists in the college, creating an atmosphere conducive to comprehensive progress while also laying emphasis on overall personality development.

The college has 87 full time-lecturers, 22 part-time and several guest lecturers. There is a well-structured library with around 100,000 books, magazines and journals. There are recreational activities, and facilities for sports and games. Computer facilities are available. The college also runs an alumni association. This College offers hostel facilities to 200 outstation students.
